The Transportation Safety Board is on the ground at the scene of last night’s fatal airplane crash about 40 kilometres east of the Fort McMurray airport.
Two planes, a Cessna 172 and a Cessna 185 collided midair at about 7:20 p.m. sending the Cessna 172 crashing into the ground killing two people. It was part of a training exercise under McMurray Aviation.
The Cessna 185 was able to safely return to the Fort McMurray airport.
“Typically at this stage investigators will travel to the site and examine the wreckage, document it, identify any pieces of interest for further examination either at the regional facility or at the TSB [Transporation Safety Board] facility in Ottawa,” said Chris Krepski, Spokesperson. “They’ll also interview witnesses, gather information such as what the weather was like at the time.”
Crews will also go through communication records, flight plans, maintenance records and anything else they can get their hands on.
Two investigators began working on the site this afternoon.
