In keeping with the Environmental Protection Order issued Tuesday by the Alberta Energy Regulator after 30 dead herons were found at Mildred Lake, Syncrude is posting daily wildlife protection efforts on its website available from the home page.

Syncrude said some of the measures include installing effigies and blasting canons every six hours to keep wildlife away from the area while they investigate what killed the birds.

The company has been cooperating with the regulator’s investigation from the outset and said it will comply with the full extent of the Environmental Protection Order which also requires Syncrude to take soil and water samples in the immediate area and implement a wildlife protection plan to ensure no more wildlife enter the area.

Two falcon rafts have been set on random activation and security is controlling site access. As well, Syncrude has placed active field operator presence on focusing monitoring and deterrent activities.

Each day the company has to indicate any steps taken in the last 24 hours and what will be done in the coming 24 hours.

On Thursday the only indication of next steps was “Continuation of wildlife deterrent measures.”
