Meagher gets haircut now shovels are in the ground for long-term care centre

Councillor Phil Meagher went to fulfill a promise he said he made back in 2013 today.

“I said when either Parsons Creek or Willow Square had shovels in the ground I’d grow my hair until then. There’s shovels in the ground at Parson’s Creek so the hair’s been cut,” he said. “I’m sticking to my word.”

He cut off a pony tail of hair and then got a trim at Mike’s Barber Shop on Franklin Avenue.

Meagher had planned to get the cut at the Golden Years Centre at Main and Manning but Joan Furber said the board wouldn’t allow it.

“We don’t want a celebration here for something we don’t want,” she said, adding that by allowing the councillor to cut his hair on site they would be sending the message that they endorsed the Parsons Creek development, which the centre does not.

“We all took it that when we got what we fought for and have been fighting for, Willow Square, that he would cut his hair,” Furber said.

Because the facility is being built in Parsons Creek instead she said they’re very unhappy. She said they were also upset they weren’t invited to the groundbreaking of the facility.

Meagher said he’s still hoping both sites will eventually house long-term care centres.
