Food bank warns of phone scam

The Wood Buffalo Food Bank has issued a warning to residents about a new telephone scam already seen in Edmonton where callers pretended to be from the food bank and asked for donations.

The callers reportedly claimed to be volunteers or staff members and asked for monetary donations by credit card. They were then using the credit card information to make unauthorized purchases.

The Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association said they are concerned the scam will move north here to Fort McMurray.

If you receive a similar phone call you’re warned it is a scam and told you should hang up immediately and report the call to police.

The Wood Buffalo Food Bank said it never asks for donations over the phone.

However, you can call them to make a donation by calling 780-743-1125. You can also visit them in person at 10117 King Street where they accept cash, credit, cheques, gift cards, and food and other items.

Donations are also accepted online.
