Salvation Army makes urgent plea for donations

The Salvation Army issued a call for help Friday afternoon and a request for a little extra Christmas cheer, saying it needs your help to meet its fundraising goal of $190,000 dollars in its local Christmas Kettle campaign.

As of Friday afternoon, only a little over half of that money had been raised, a total of $105,000.

There were only 11 days remaining in the campaign at the time of the call for help.

The money raised through the annual fundraiser will help provide financial assistance for families who are struggling to make ends meet in these tough economic times. The Salvation Army helps people to make rent and bill payments on a one-time emergency basis, they help with job training, interview skills training, clothing, food, shelter, rehabilitation and many more vital services for the vulnerable in our community.

In 2015 financial requests have risen 30 per cent and the expectation, according to the Salvation Army, was that the trend would increase in 2016.

In a release the organization said it recognized that in the community there is a sense of donor’s fatigue but asked people to realize there are many needs that must be met.

“We are saying ‘Thank You’ in advance for your financial support in ‘Helping us – Help others,'” the release said.

Donations can be made at each of the six kettle locations, at 9919 MacDonald Avenue, at 125 Elmore Drive in Thickwood, by credit card by calling 780-791-9903, or online.
