The Canadian Federation of Independent Business would like to see the Alberta legislature return to work early and deal with some pressing economic matters.

CFIB Alberta director Amber Ruddy said things are getting progressively worse, and the organization would like to see the government take action.

“A good start would be to announce the plan about how they’re going to balance the budget on an accelerated basis,” Ruddy said. “They could announce that they plan to press pause on the $15 minimum wage hike.”

Ruddy also said the NDP can’t afford to wait on a lot of these more pressing issues.

“Something should change when it comes to policies that haven’t been implemented yet. We need to put a pause button on things that can continue to erode the current business climate,” she said.

According to the CFIB, during the last recession, many big businesses enacted significant cost-cutting measures and laid people off in droves, while small and medium-sized businesses held on to their staff for as long as possible, providing stability to the economy.

This time around, however, the organization is seeing rapidly growing layoff numbers in smaller firms as they struggle to the extended downturn.
