Suncor, oilsands project

Calgary-based oil company Suncor is hoping to restart its Base Plant and other operations in the oilsands as early as Monday.

In a message posted on social media Friday night, Mark Little, vice president of upstream operations, said safety was the priority when a wildfire prompted a second mandatory evacuation of sites north of Fort McMurray earlier this week.

He also set a tentative date for resuming operations at Base Plant, Firebag, MacKay River and the East Tank Farm.

“We’re putting the plan together. It would be a fairly small team that would deploy on that particular day and then each day after we would move forward,” he said. “Our intent is to update that date daily. So if it holds, great. If it doesn’t, we’ll continue to slide it forward.”

Suncor has cleared its sites twice in the last two weeks.

“We are confident that all employees will return to work in a phased manner over the next few weeks. Employees who are not required to return to work will continue to receive their base salary until June 9th. Employees should be prepared to return to work when notified. Please make arrangements to be prepared for return to work,” Little said.

The company plans to release more information for calling workers back to site Sunday night.
