On cutting-edge voter data, Trump critically behind Clinton

PHILADELPHIA – Data scientists working with the Republican Party say Donald Trump trails Hillary Clinton in using digital campaigning to win over voters.

The science defines 21st century political campaigns, but Trump has dismissed it. President Barack Obama used data to win two terms, and the Clinton campaign has worked on its own data operation for nearly a year.

It’s too early to tell whether the late start signals trouble for Trump, but it does illustrate the difference between Trump’s proudly outsider campaign and the institutional knowledge within Clinton’s.

Democrats have dominated the use of precision digital-marketing data as an electoral science for a decade, and Republicans have chased it for as long.
