The Fort McMurray Airport Authority’s Board of Directors has pegged R.J. Steenstra as its replacement for outgoing President and CEO Scott Clements, who is retiring.

Steenstra will begin his new role on Sep. 12, he’s spent the past five years with the Red Deer Regional Airport Authority where he’s increased revenue four years in a row.

“R.J. joins Fort McMurray Airport at a key point in our development,” said Airport Authority Board Chair Allan Kallal. “His appointment represents a new era that builds on previous successes. R.J. brings a wealth of airport leadership experience within the Alberta aviation sector and has a successful track record of strategy development and delivery.”

The FMAA’s new hire is currently the Vice Chair for the International Association of Airport Executives in Canada.

“I am excited to be joining the Fort McMurray Airport Authority at such a transitional time for the airport and community,” said Steenstra. “I am looking forward to bringing my passion and energy to a resilient team and community, building on the work that has been done over the past years and the strength of the community.”

In an interview with Red Deer radio station BIG 105.5 FM Steenstra noted that his last day down south will be Sep. 9, seeing through the completion of a runway project. Which he said was one of his biggest accomplishments in Red Deer.

The search for Clements’ replacement began earlier this year.
