The RMWB said there were thousands of people tuning in online and by phone to its first-ever town hall meeting, held in response to a request from delegates at municipal council meetings for more information coming directly from those in charge of decision making for re-entry, health and safety, recovery, rebuilding, supports and more.

Present on the call were Mayor Melissa Blake and Wood Buffalo Recovery Committee members Councillors Keith McGrath and Allan Vinni, Director of Emergency Management Bob Couture, Jenn McManus with the Red Cross, and representatives from Alberta Health Services and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Many residents wanted answers about a timeline for returning to green homes in restricted areas and beginning demolition and cleanup of the homes damaged in those areas.

Director of Emergency Management Bob Couture said they are waiting for sifting to be complete, which is expected to happen July 8, before starting coordinated demolition or cleanup efforts. He also said the results of a second round of environmental testing, which are due by mid-July, will help determine a timeline for both.

To request a permit for that process, you can apply online here or in person at 309 Powder Drive in Timberlea. Permits are being issued already for homes outside of the restricted areas.

Following a question from a resident about Transit Services Adam Hardiman, communications manager at the RMWB, said they are aiming to have a full schedule roll-out on July 4 that will look different from the schedule before the fire based on public consultations and other feedback. More information on the resumption of full transit services is expected this week.

Another resident asked about childcare services and was told daycares and services for children with special needs are coming back online in early- and mid-July. The RMWB released a list of such services last week.

Anyone who is a renter who did not have tenants’ insurance, or any other insurance to cover their losses in the fire, is encouraged to get in touch with the Red Cross. They will assist you in getting the support you need. You can visit them in town at the Hardin Street Building or at the Future Forward Building or, if you are unable to return, you can connect with them in the community where you are staying or online or by calling 1-888-350-6070.

Some residents took to Twitter after the town hall to say their questions went unanswered, including questions about the by-law that increased salaries for members of council who choose to take the pay bump.

The town hall was only one hour long and so not all questions were taken. Another is planned for next Monday evening at 7 p.m. In the meantime you’re encouraged to take questions to the PULSE Line at 780-743-7000.

Monday night’s town hall meeting recording will be available online for you to listen to.
