A heat warning is in effect for Fort McMurray Wednesday as the mercury is expected to tip 29 degrees.

“Heat Warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion,” reads the warning from Environment Canada. “A period with maximum daily temperatures reaching near 29 [Celsius] or above and minimum overnight temperatures reaching near 14 [Celsius] or above are expected. Temperatures are expected to cool later this week.”

You should reschedule outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day if possible. Be sure to take frequent breaks from the heat.

Drinking plenty of water and other non-alcohol, non-caffeinated beverages is key to staying hydrated. Be sure not to leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, not even for a few minutes.

Be sure to watch for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, and fainting.

Seniors, children those with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers and those who are socially isolated need to be monitored closely.
