Fort Smith, N.W.T., on evacuation alert due to northern Alberta wildfire

Residents of the Town of Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories are on high alert as a nearby wildfire has them on standby orders for evacuation according to the CBC.

The wildfire is burning about five kilometres south of the Town on the Alberta side of the border with the North West Territories.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry says there is no threat the community at this time, the fire is about 4.5 hectares in size and is considered under-control within the Fort McMurray Forest Management Area.

Crews first began responding to the fire around 1 p.m., Friday. It’s being attacked with helicopters and air tankers from the N.W.T, Alberta, and Parks Canada.
