City News

Calgary police have charged a man in connection with the death of missing five-year-old Taliyah Leigh Marsman.

A body believed to be that of Taliyah, who had been the subject of an Amber Alert, was been found on a rural property near Calgary on Thursday.

Calgary police said they were “deeply saddened” to report the tragic end to the story of Taliyah, who was reported missing after the body of her mother, Sara Baillie, 34, was found Monday night in the home they shared.

Two counts of first-degree murder have been laid against 46-year-old Edward Delten Downey, who was taken into custody at a strip mall in the city.

Police said his name would not be released until after he appeared before a judge, but they said it is believed he was an acquaintance of both mother and daughter.

Searchers who were scouring a property near Chestermere, Alta., found the girl’s body. The cause of death was not known.

The Amber Alert, which had been issued Tuesday, was cancelled.
