The 2016 Baseball Canada Cup officially gets underway Wednesday morning as Prince Edward Island takes on New Brunswick at Ross Hennigar Ball Park at 8:30 a.m.

Although the official Opening Ceremonies aren’t until 6 p.m., at Shell Place.

The Tournament pits the top U-17 talent in Canada head-to-head in a province-versus-province format.  Ten provinces choose an all-star team to compete for the National Championship.

Baseball Canada uses the tournament as a scouting tool for its Junior National Team, the event is also highly scouted by college recruiters and even some Major League Baseball teams.

British-Columbia enters the tournament as the three-time defending champions, but will face tough competition in Pool A with Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan.

Pool B features Québec as the team to beat along with New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Despite the challenges we have faced this spring, we know this will be a fantastic event both for the participants and our community,” said Jodie Cooper, Co-Chair of the 2016 Baseball Canada Cup Organizing Committee in a press release. “We look forward to showcasing our region for our visitors, and taking this opportunity to celebrate a great event with our community this summer.”

Team Alberta opens its tournament against Ontario at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday at Ross Hennigar. Alberta will then take on Saskatchewan at 7 p.m., at Shell Place following the Opening Ceremonies.

Here is Alberta’s schedule for the tournament:

  • Wednesday Aug. 3, 11:30 a.m. – vs Ontario at Ross Hennigar BallPark
  • Wednesday Aug. 3, 7 p.m., – vs Saskatchewan at Shell Place
  • Thursday, Aug. 4, 1 p.m., – vs British-Columbia at Shell Place
  • Friday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m., – vs Ontario at Shell Place
  • Friday, Aug. 5, 7 p.m., – vs Saskatchewan at Shell Place
  • Saturday, Aug. 6, 12 p.m., – vs British-Columbia at Shell Place

The Bronze Medal Game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., at Shell Place on Sunday, Aug. 7, while the Gold Medal Game will go at 7:30 p.m.
