A routine stop by the Wood Buffalo Integrated Traffic Unit during a late night checkstop turned up a stolen handgun and has one local man facing six charges.

Mounties allege that a handgun spotted on the floor of the front passenger seat belonged to 25-year-old Cody Slade. The ITU was conducting the checkstop on Eagle Ridge Boulevard shortly before 1 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 6.

All four people inside the vehicle were arrested at the scene, although Slade is the only one facing charges, according to police he was intoxicated at the time of his arrest.

Slade appeared in court for the first time Monday for his bail hearing. Bail was denied and he will remain in police custody until his next appearance in court on August 29.

He’s facing one charge each of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime, weapons possession contrary to an order along with two charges of failure to comply with conditions.

The Wood Buffalo RCMP notes that Slade has a history with police, his rap sheet features nine convictions on a mix of charges related to weapons, drugs and physical violence.

The handgun allegedly possessed by Slade was reported as stolen in 2012.
