Police warn of fraudulent callers claiming to be RCMP

Local RCMP are warning residents to be on the lookout for fraudsters calling pretending to be police officers in order to ask for your personal and banking information.

The Wood Buffalo RCMP said they have received multiple complaints of telephone scammers that have reportedly been using software to display the Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment’s phone number when making these calls.

The RCMP said they will never request personal or banking information from you and tell you never to give such information, including bank account numbers and social insurance numbers, to anyone over the phone because scammers will use a variety of tactics to try to get that information from you. They also urge you to use caution when providing personal and banking information over the internet and to only do so in a secure way and not when it is solicited.

Police said you should check the facts and do not succumb to pressure situations. They said not to be afraid of simply hanging up if someone is persistent or pushy.

If you have a suspicion about a call you’ve received you’re asked to call police immediately after hanging up.

You can contact the local detachment at 780-788-4000.
