The 2015 Zombie Run

The 5th Annual Zombie Run in support of the Fort McMurray United Way is being hosted by Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta on Saturday, October 1 in the Birchwood Trails.

The 5km run or walk route will start and finish at the Doug Barnes Cabin at 1:00 with registration opening for zombies at 11 a.m. and at noon for runners. The race wraps up with a BBQ for survivors, non-survivors, volunteers and zombies outside the cabin.

“What makes this course different is that zombies will be scattered around and popping up throughout the route and the survivors who dare to enter the race will have to avoid being eaten by them,” according to a release from Girls Inc.

Each runner, or survivor, will be equipped with a flag football belt with a total of three flags on it. Throughout the route, the zombies they will encounter will attempt to steal their flags. The runner must avoid the zombies; but the moment all three of their flags are gone, they are undead.

Extra flags will be available for $20 a piece at each health station along the route, which will also include water and first aid supplies.

Funds raised from the event will go to support one of Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta’s major supporters, the United Way of Fort McMurray, for their fall campaign.

If you’d like to take part in the Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta 5th Annual Zombie Run as a runner, zombie or volunteer, the information can be found on the Girls Inc. website.

Runners who raise $150 or more in pledges before the event will have the $40 registration fee waived. Participants must be 12 years of age or older.
