The province is warning anyone planning travel through Red Deer that there will be major construction along the QEII.

An $80 million interchange improvement project is under way that involves removing three bridges, building five new ones and improving the highway and interesections.

If you’re heading through Red Deer be prepared for delays and make sure to check 511 by calling, following their Twitter account @511Alberta, or searching #hwy2gaetz before you hit the road.

Once complete, the new interchange system will improve traffic flow and safety along this critical corridor. Construction is expected to be completed by Fall 2018.

One of the first major impacts will be the closure of the southbound Gaetz Avenue bridge to QE11 in Late September. This closure will remain in place for the duration of the project to allow contractors to remove the existing bridge, construct the new bridge and realign this section of the QE11.

Temporary traffic signals will be installed at the Highway 2A (Taylor Drive) interchange ramp to accommodate additional trafic flow at the Taylor Drive southbound/QE11 access.

Alberta Transportation said it thanks motorists for their patience and consideration for the safety of construction workers while work continues on this important infrastructure improvement on the QE11 corridor. Alberta Transportation is asking you to please observe all posted signage and speed limits and use caution when driving through construction zones.
