15 students receive art awards

More than a dozen proud students accepted awards on Monday evening as part of the Arts Council Wood Buffalo Suncor Student Art Awards reception.

Throughout the year, Suncor hosts three student art exhibitions at their Business Centre the first is for Public High Schools, the second for Catholic High Schools, and the third includes the Suncor employee voted favourite High School pieces from the first two exhibitions as well as the work of Junior High students from both districts.

The recipients of the 2016 Suncor Student Awards were decided by Suncor employee voting. First place recieved $500, Second place recieved $300, Third got $200 while Fourth and Fifth place recieved $50.00 gift cards to WeeBounce Art Supplies store.

In the exhibition of Catholic High Schools, first place went to Wendell Engreso of Holy Trinity High School. Aleksis Agustin, also of Holy Trinity, won second place, while rounding out the top three was Jade Cardinal of Father Mercredi High School. In fourth place was Rachel Farrel of Father Mercredi and Brooke Freeman of Holy Trinity became the third member of Holy Trinity to win an award, coming in fifth place.

In the Public High Schools exhibition, first and second place went to Hanna Liashenko of Composite High School; third place to Brianna Mills of Composite; fourth place to Shania Waterman of Composite; fifth place to Jessica Carter of Westwood Community High School.

Rounding out all competitors, was the Junior High Schools exhibition that finished with the final results of first place to Carissa Fortin of Father Mercredi; second place to Shayla Dampier of Father Mercredi; third place to Morissa Hendricks of Holy Trinity; fourth place to Devki Patel of Holy Trinity; fifth place to Annicah Sencil of Father Mercredi.

Arts Council Wood Buffalo said it is grateful to Suncor for their continued dedication to ensuring the arts community has the resources needed to thrive. The council also said it wanted to congratulate all competitors and is looking to the 2017 edition of the Suncor Student Art Awards.
