Syncrude Canada Ltd. employee volunteers have voted for five Fort McMurray non-profits to share a $45,000 Give with Heart donation.

The recipient of a $25,000 gift is Some Other Solutions (SOS), while The HUB Family Resource Centre, Fort McMurray Boys and Girls Club, Fort McMurray Search and Rescue and Ptarmigan Ski Club will each receive $5,000.

“These donations are about providing well-deserved recognition for those that do so much in building a better community,” says Syncrude President and CEO Mark Ward. “On behalf of Syncrude, I’d like to thank everyone involved, including our employees who volunteer their time to help others. It’s truly about working together as good neighbours.”

SOS provides youth mentoring, grief and loss support, suicide prevention and provides vital services to empower individuals to meet all of life’s challenges.

“We are so grateful to Syncrude for choosing SOS as the recipient of $25,000 from the Give with Heart campaign which will support our Grief and Loss program when our community needs it most,” says Alie Warnes, Executive Director, Some Other Solutions.

Syncrude’s Good Neighbours program grants $500 to eligible non-profit organizations when an employee or retiree volunteers at least 40 hours in a year and applies for funding.

A total of $270,600 was distributed to 85 organizations in 2015.  $134,000 of the $270 thousand went to community groups to help offset the cost of travel to out-of-town events such as sports tournaments.

Every year, Syncrude donates roughly six million dollars to various groups, projects and events to improve the quality of life in communities where it’s employees work and live.
