The Municipality has taken a proactive approach and launched a Firebreak Drainage Improvement project.
The project is to eliminate safety hazards or the risk property damage from ponding and drainage issues that emerged in firebreaks that were damaged during tree and vegetation removal.
Contractors will be grading over 100 sites along the 30 kilometres of firebreak, starting in Timberlea along the Birchwood Trails, and then north of Confederation Way. The work involves shaping the areas with heavy equipment so water flows towards existing natural drainage routes without pooling and away from private property.
The work is expected to be completed before freeze-up, to prevent further drainage issues during the spring melt.
The drainage improvement project will not include any landscaping or restoration of the firebreak areas in its scope of work.
Community engagements for landscaping and development will take place in 2017 to allow for public input.
