Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) in Ontario has raised $4,286 for the Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD).

“Last spring, our thoughts turned to Fort McMurray as school communities there dealt with the devastating fires,” says Kathi Wallace, SCDSB Director of Education. “As many Canadians did, we felt a call to help. Our elementary schools in the Collingwood area answered.”

The funds raised will go towards students’ mental health.

Bill Floyd, Principal at Mountain View Public School, adds “Students, staff and community members from five local schools participated in everything from movie nights to frozen treat sales to help raise funds. We look forward to our schools forming friendships with Fort McMurray public schools – it’s truly an act of students helping students, communities helping communities, Canadians helping Canadians.”

Classes from Connaught Public School, Admiral Collingwood Elementary School, Nottawa Elementary School, Mountain View Elementary School and Byng Public School will speak with their peers at Timberlea Public School and Christina Gordon Public School in Fort McMurray through live Google Hangout video sessions planned for November 15th.
