FMSPCA receiving a cheque from the Edmonton Humane Society

The CEO of the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is presenting the Fort McMurray SPCA (FMSPCA) with a $150,000 cheque.

The money is the remainder of donated funds raised for the FMSPCA during the wildfire.

“We are pleased to present the Fort McMurray SPCA with a cheque for $150,000 so they can ensure the humane care and treatment of animals adversely affected by the wildfires this past spring”, says CEO Miranda Jordan-Smith. “During the period of disaster relief, The Edmonton Humane Society became a hub of monetary and tangible good donations and we are tremendously grateful for the outpouring of kindness and compassion, and the contributions received by supporters.”

EHS led fundraising initiatives through their website and social media platforms, the donations collected were used to provide care for the displaced animals, as well as provide ongoing support to families in need of supplies for their animals.

EHS also, shipped a surplus of pet food and supply donations to Fort McMurray back in late June, and CEO Miranda Jordan-Smith identified that monetary donations should now be diverted to the Fort McMurray SPCA, where they are needed most.

The SPCA plans to use these funds to help cover the medical and care costs associated with the free surrender program the organization launched regional pet owners who could no longer continue care due to financial hardship, as well as residents who were unable to secure pet friendly accommodations.

“The Fort McMurray SPCA would like to thank the Edmonton Humane Society for their support of our community and our pets during the wildfires. Our organization continues to provide ongoing, long term supports to our community as we all move forward on the path to recovery and we are very grateful to receive funds in support of our continuing to make a difference and save lives,” said Tara Clark, FMSPCA, Executive Director.

Two of the organizations’ major fundraisers were cancelled this summer with the wildfires and evacuation orders.
