Memorial service, firefighter parade planned to honour Bo Cooper

Last Updated Nov 16, 2016 at 6:15 pm MDT

This Saturday friends, family, and the entire community will gather to mourn the loss of Bo Cooper, the 27-year-old firefighter behind whom the community rallied as he sought experimental treatment for a third diagnosis of leukemia.

Cooper passed away November 6.

A memorial service will be held at the field house at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19.

The service will be preceded by a firefighter parade that will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Corner of Franklin Avenue and MacDonald Avenue and onto C.A.Knight Way and will proceed to MacDonald Island.

Seating for the ceremony will begin at 1:30 in the field house. The ceremony will be followed by a reception in the Shell Place Grand Ballroom from 4-6 p.m.

The service is open to all members of the community that rallied behind Bo Cooper and his family during their time of need.

Bo Cooper was a firefighter in Fort McMurray who worked as a volunteer until he was hired by the Fort McMurray Fire Department in 2009. He was treated for cancer successfully twice for diagnoses since 2011 and had been in remission before the third diagnosis forced him and his family to look for alternative treatments in the United States. Because of the astronomical cost of the treatment it would have been unattainable for the family had it not been for the support of the community and people across the country who helped to raise nearly $1 million for his treatment, travel and other costs.

Bo received two treatments of the trial Car T Cell therapy at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda Maryland and was even declared in remission in April. But the treatments ultimately couldn’t rid his body of the cancer that had returned again and again despite his courageous efforts to fight it.
