Volunteers urgently needed for Syncrude Food Drive this weekend

The annual Syncrude Food Drive is just days away and volunteers are still desperately needed to man the stations at grocery stores across the community, at Walmart, at the Anzac Grocery Store and at the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Warehouse.

The Food Drive runs December 2 to 4, and is aiming to raise $75,000 and over 75,000 lbs of food to support a 94 per cent increase in need in our community.

By volunteering you’ll be doing your part to help make sure no one in our community goes hungry.

The corporate challenge is on December 1 and companies are encouraged to one-up one another with their donations to help make a huge difference for people in need in our community. Last year the Corporate Challenge raised more than $325,000 for the Food Bank. This year’s goal is $350,000, rising alongside the growing need in the community.

In the last fiscal year the Food Bank’s programs fed 17,027 people, which is a 94 per cent increase over the previous year. The need is expected to stay high through the recovery process.

“This year, has been unlike any other year as we have experienced disaster far worse than the economic tailspin we were already in with the 2016 wild fire,” said Anna Noble, Communications and Development Coordinator for the Food Bank in a volunteer email. “As we began our new year in August we continue to see that our statistics will once again show that there is an increased need for our services.”

Every food item and every dollar makes a difference.
