Santa Claus comes to town tomorrow

Last Updated Dec 2, 2016 at 3:14 pm MDT

Spectators line the Franklin Avenue parade route at the 2015 Santa Claus Parade.

Saturday, December 3 is the annual Santa Claus Parade and Lights of Christmas, celebrating the spirit of the season in our downtown core.

Festivities begin with hot chocolate, carolling, and bonfires at the Lights of Christmas at Jubilee Plaza at 5:30 followed by the Parade at 6:30.

This year the parade will move from Reidel Street along Franklin Avenue north to Morrison Street.

To make way for Santa’s sleigh and reindeer, motorists are reminded of the following road closures:

Prairie Loop Blvd (Riedel St. to King St.):  12 – 8 p.m.

Riedel St.: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Franklin Ave. (Riedel St. to Morrison St.):  6 – approx. 8 p.m.

Morrison St. (Franklin Ave. to Morimoto Dr.): 6:30 – 9 p.m.

The RMWB said it’s important to note road closure times are approximate.

As the parade passes, roads will reopen. For the safety of our volunteers and parade participants, barricades will be set up to prevent vehicles accessing the closed roads.

As well, from approximately 5:30 – 9 p.m., there will be transit detours and some suspended service to accommodate for road closures and float staging for the parade.

Highlights of Transit Detours

  • Routes 91 and 92 will be suspended for the duration of the parade.
  • Routes 15, 16, 10 will depart from Macdonald Ave. before Main St.
  • Routes 11, 1, 2, 99 will depart from Main St. before MacDonald Ave.
  • Route 99 will be serviced by a SMART bus rather than a conventional bus for the duration of the parade.
