Notley open to talks on child care panel as legislature sitting wraps up

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says there is room to maneuver on opposition demands in order to rescue a fractious all-party panel exploring ways to keep kids safe in government care.

Notley says there are some elements of what the opposition wants that can be included.

The panel was announced by Notley after it was revealed a four-year-old girl died violently in government care two years ago.

Since then, little to nothing has been done to learn why or who is responsible.

The four leaders of Alberta’s opposition say they will boycott the panel unless there are changes, such as whistleblower protection for those who come forward.

Notley made her comments as the fall legislature sitting wrapped up.

The sitting saw the N-D-P government implement new legislation and rules to phase out coal-fired electricity in favour of greener solutions.
