Province declares Bovine TB outbreak a disaster

The Alberta Government has declared the Bovine Tuberculosis outbreak in the southeast corner of the province a disaster.

The decision was made in light of the financial losses and hardships being suffered by ranchers since the first case of Bovine TB connected to a ranch near Jenner surfaced in late September.

Producers met with Alberta Agriculture officials in Brooks last week where details on how they will be compensated were laid out.

In an update on Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said six farms had been removed from the quarantined list, leaving 45 farms in southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan still under quarantine

About 26,000 head of cattle remain on the quarantine list, with about 10,000 expected to be slaughtered for disease control.

The CFIA says it hopes to wrap up its on-farm testing in January, however the agency warns quarantines could extend beyond that.
