Residents rebuilding should check water and sewer reconnections

An area of town heavily damaged in the wildfire. NICOLE BAGGIO. Staff.

Residents who are rebuilding their homes should take proactive measures to ensure water and sewer services are in good working condition and that reconnections are done properly.

There are concerns that some of these connections may have become blocked with fire-related debris.

The RMWB will be doing verifications at the curb stops of fire damaged properties to make sure they are clear from debris. Homeowners will be required to remove any material, including backfill, construction supplies and fire-related debris that may have been placed over the curb stops.

Residents are encouraged to have a contractor run a camera inside all connections before the lines are put back in service to ensure there are no blockages. If blockages are not cleared, the lines will back-up into the property, leaving residents with a clean-up that is both time-consuming and costly.

Homeowners will also be required to repair any curb stops that are found to have been damaged during the demolition or rebuild of their home.

In Stone Creek, Parsons Creek North and Walnut Crescent there are three connection services.

Contractors may accidentally cross-connect storm and sewer pipes, residents must work with their contractor to ensure a Utility Connection (UC) permit is obtained before reconnections are done and that a follow-up inspection is completed.

If your home does not have a three-connection system, your contractor does not need a UC permit.

If you have questions about verifying your pipes are clear of blockages or the process for obtaining a UC permit, you can find more information at RMWB.ca/rebuild.

Residents are also encouraged to email recovery@rmwb.ca or call the PULSE Line (780) 743-7000.
