Upcoming permit changes to improve inspection process

Starting in January there will be some updates to the permit processes to improve safety and compliance.

Building Permit Placard:

A permit placard will be provided for all building permits issued and must be displayed at the construction site along with the address, both must be clearly visible form the street.

These identification tools are for site inspections and crucial for the safety of all workers if an accident occurred, emergency services could quickly locate the site.

If contractors fail to clearly display the placard and address the site will fail its scheduled Safety Codes inspection.

Permits issued prior to 2017 will not require a placard, but contractors are encouraged to get one. Placards can be obtained by logging onto E-permitting and selecting the option to view and print Building permits, which include the placard.

Gas Appliance Ventilation Permits:

If residents want to install any gas appliance they will need Gas Appliance Ventilation permits.

These are separate from a gas permit, which is required to install the gas line to the appliance.

This permit will make sure the correct contractor is held responsible for their work.
It is important that proper permits are obtained and inspections are completed prior to use of the gas appliance.

Basement Developments:

Before developing a basement space for personal use or as a secondary suite, there will be a specific safety codes permit needed.

For the community to be built safely and in agreement with all legislation, specific building, electrical, plumbing, gas and appliance ventilation permits will be required for all basement developments.
