Both Huskies volleyball teams come out with weekend splits

In what was their biggest weekend series of the season so far, the Keyano Huskies women’s volleyball team were unable to gain any ground on the NAIT Ooks despite winning the first match.

In the first match, the women Huskies came out on fire and made the most of it in grabbing the first set (25-20). Set two and four were taken by the Ooks while the Huskies won set three which sent the game to the fifth and deciding set.

The Huskies came out on fire just like they did in set one in grabbing a 10-4 lead in the first to 15.

However, the Ooks roared back and brought it within a score of 13-11, but the Ooks slow start proved to be too much to overcome, as the Huskies took the five-set thriller (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12) to improve to (6-11) on the season, but more importantly they temporarily gained ground on the Ooks who dropped to 9-8 and remained one spot above the Huskies.

As she has been all season long, Danya Nieman was a force in scoring 25 kills. Nicole Robinson chipped in nine kills. For the Ooks Hannah Gorgichuk and Nalani Stang led the offense with 13 and 12 points respectively.

In match two, the Huskies looked poised to sweep the Ooks and jump up in the standings, but the Ooks did not allow that to happen.

Once again, the Ooks and Huskies went the distance, the only difference in this game, was the Ooks found a way to outlast the home squad.

With the weekend split, the Huskies (6-12) remain in fifth place in the North Division, while the Ooks (10-8) strengthened their hold on fourth place in the same North Division

The Keyano Huskies men’s volleyball team came into play this weekend as the #5 ranked team in the nation and for good reason.

The Huskies entered the weekend’s action with a (16-0) record while losing only four sets.

After two matches over the weekend, the Huskies remained ranked nationally but saw their massive winning streak come to an end at 17 games.

In match one, the Ooks gave the Huskies everything they had, but the Huskies proved to be a little too much as they came out with a (25-21, 26-24, 25-18) straight set win.

As he has all season long, Jakub Zdybek led the Huskies with 11 points. Not far behind him was Mike Archibald with eight. The Ooks were led offensively by Devon Klein and his 12 points.

In match two, the Huskies once again took on the Ooks and for the first time all season, the Huskies dropped a match.

The Ooks showed in the first match, that they are a team not to take lightly, and on Saturday evening, they proved that with a three sets to one victory

With the loss, the Huskies (17-1) still sit comfortably atop the North Division with an eight point lead over the Kings University who have won four games in a row.

It was a big weekend split for the Ooks who moved into third place and now have a four-point cushion over Augustana and a six-point lead over Grande Prairie heading into the ladder portion of the regular season.
