Application filed for Keystone X-L pipeline

TransCanada has filed an application seeking approval of the Keystone X-L pipeline through Nebraska — a hotbed of opposition to the project.

Most of the opposition in the state is due to concerns that a spill could contaminate the Ogallala Aquifer, which irrigates much of the central U-S.

But TransCanada says the pipeline would avoid the Nebraska Sandhills area of the state under which the aquifer sits and it expects a decision on its application to the Nebraska Public Service Commission by the end of the year.

The Calgary-based company filed a presidential permit application for the pipeline from Alberta to the U-S Gulf Coast late last month at the invitation of U-S President Donald Trump.
