Triple murderer Garland in hospital after another jailhouse attack

For the second time since he was sentenced for murdering a little Calgary boy and his grandparents, Douglas Garland has reportedly been beaten up by fellow inmates.

Edmonton Police Service spokeswoman Cheryl Sheppard says a man was taken to hospital just after 9 p.m. on Monday after an assault.

The Correctional Service of Canada says the injured inmate was immediately evaluated by staff and taken to an outside hospital for treatment.

The 57-year-old was only recently transferred to the maximum security prison in Edmonton from the Calgary Remand Centre, where he was also assaulted by inmates. Four of them have since been charged.

The first attack happened on the same day he was sentenced to life with no chance of parole for 75 years for murdering Alvin and Kathy Liknes and five-year-old Nathan O’Brien.

One of Garland’s lawyers expressed deep concern about the attacks and said Garland is a security risk, which means extra steps must be taken to keep him safe.
