Due to higher temperatures and warmer weather expected over the next couple of days, daytime load limit restrictions are being put into effect for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road and the La Loche and Lac La Biche Winter Trails.

Starting on Wednesday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the load limit for all three winter roads will be reduced to 5,000 kg until further notice.

In the evening, from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m the load limits will return to the following levels:

  • Fort Chipewyan Winter Road – 45,000 kg
  • La Loche Winter Trail – 27,500 kg
  • Lac La Biche Winter Trail – unrestricted

This safety precaution has been taken to maintain the integrity of the roads.

There are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage, so always be prepared for emergencies.

Motorists are advised to take caution as icy conditions are anticipated and are reminded to obey all posted signage and use caution when passing maintenance equipment and water trucks.

A maximum speed of 30 km/h is advised and high clearance 4×4 vehicles are recommended.

After travelling though freshly flooded crossings, Motorists are also encouraged to test their brakes after.
