The Wood Buffalo region’s only dedicated badminton centre celebrated its grand opening on Friday, April 21 as the Don Scott McMurray Law Office Badminton Centre at Shell Place.

It was designed and built with the badminton community of the region in mind.

“When Shell Place was developed and built, the amenities in the facility were determined through engagements with members of the community to determine what recreational opportunities they would like to enjoy in a new facility,” said Rachel Orser, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo. “One of those amenities was a badminton centre, and it is a pleasure today to welcome Don Scott McMurray Law Office as our new partner at the centre.”

The centre includes four courts in a climate-controlled environment allowing for year-round enjoyment of a sport that crosses cultural spectrums and sees huge participation levels in our region.

Don Scott, long-time resident of Fort McMurray, was really excited about the grand opening.

“As a long-time badminton enthusiast, I am delighted to partner with the RRC at the badminton centre as they provide opportunities for members of the community to enjoy the sport and grow their skills,” said Don Scott, owner of Don Scott McMurray Law Office.

Scott noted that this place means a lot to him, he frequents Shell Place and the new centre.

“I always thought badminton was a great sport for people to get some exercise and meet new people,” said Scott.

Him and his children have been playing the sport a lot recently and Scott himself will be taking part in a badminton tournament that will be held at the centre this weekend.

The courts are available for both booked and drop-in badminton now.
