Off-highway vehicle helmets in Alberta required by mid-May

Anyone riding off-road vehicles on public land in Alberta will be required to wear a helmet starting May 15.

The provincial government says the introduction of the law follows consultations last year that found broad support for Alberta to join the other provinces in requiring helmets for those riding off-highway vehicles such as A-T-V’s, snowmobiles and dirt bikes on public land.

Those failing to comply face fines of $93 dollars for not wearing an approved helmet to $155 dollars for failing to wear a helmet.

The Alberta Off-Highway Vehicle Association applauds the move, saying head injuries are the number one risk to riders.
