On May 13, 2017, at approximately 2:43 a.m., while in custody at the Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment for drug-related offences, a 32-year-old man asked to make a phone call.

He was moved into a secure phone room to do so.

At approximately 2:47 a.m., upon hearing a noise from the phone room, an RCMP member entered and found the man on the floor in medical distress.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended, provided immediate treatment and transported the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately two hours later.

The man had no visible signs of trauma or injury.

The Director of Law Enforcement assigned the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

ASIRT’s mandate is to objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
