A hiring fair in Calgary wants more people to call Fort McMurray home.

The Discover.Work.Live. event continues at the University of Calgary Wednesday, with the aim of filling gaps in the town’s labour force.

Alexis Foster, Director of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce said a lot people don’t know about the Wood Buffalo region.

“Unfortunately, we’re still known as the oilsands town or the community that was affected by the wildfire, but we are a great community and we’ve got lots to do, and we’re really a family focused town as well, and a lot of people don’t normally get to see that,” she said.

A wide range of employers are looking to hire.

“Some restaurants there. You’ll also have people like AHS – they’re there looking for nurses and healthcare professionals,” Foster said.

“Construction, especially right now, we have noticed that construction jobs – they’re expected to create 1,400 jobs over the next five years.”
