Day two of the Norceca Pan-American Volleyball Championships continued on Wednesday at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre with three games.

4:00 P.M. Puerto Rico VS Chile

The 22nd-ranked Puerto Ricans were the final team to play their first game in this tournament, and they did not disappoint in a (23-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-10) straight set win over Team Chile on Wednesday afternoon.

After narrowly winning the third set, the Puerto Ricans stormed out of the gate in the fourth set led by Pedro Molina who went on a streak that included four straight service aces as they went up 10-3 early. From there, Puerto Rico continued to put pressure on Chile, and Chile had no response as they dropped their second straight game in the tournament and will settle for third place in Pool A.

With the win, Thursday afternoon’s game between Cuba and Puerto Rico will decide first place in Pool A.

Bastian Fuentes led Chile with 15 points.

6:00 P.M. Brazil VS Guatemala

The fourth-ranked worldwide Brazilians continued their dominance on Wednesday night at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre. Brazil gave up just 35 points over the three sets in a (25-14, 25-10, 25-11) straight set victory over the much smaller, less skilled Guatemalans.

Despite Guatemala playing passionate volleyball at the beginning of each set, the much taller Brazilians proved to be far too much in this game.

Playing in just the first two sets, Victor Cardoso recorded 11 points with six of them being attacks. Felipe Roque scored eight points for team Brazil.

Between their two best players, Erik Flores and Wagner Chacon, they managed just 12 kills on 52 attempts while Edras Pineda chipped in 3.

8:00 P.M. Canada VS Barbados

In front of over 300 loud, enthusiastic fans, the eighth-ranked Canadians took to the court for their second game against Team Barbados.

Thanks to some very timely long runs, the Canadians earned a (25-14, 25-17, 25-16) straight set victory.

Despite losing 3-0, Guatemala played tactically strong volleyball early in each set, but Canada’s runs late in the sets including a 17-6 run in the third set after trailing 10-8 to Barbados, ended up propelling the Canadians.

Eric Loeppky was stellar for the Canadians in recording 14 attacks on 19 attempts, while Vernon-Evans Sharone recorded 11 kills on 15 attempts.

Loeppky who plays collegiately at Trinity Western University, also tacked on two service aces while Fynnian McCarthy dominated the net with three solo stuff blocks.

With the win, it will be a showdown of two of the top teams in the World that will decide first place in Pool B.
