The province has committed $1.5 million to prevent and end elder abuse across Alberta.

Thirty-one community organizations and municipalities will receive funding from the government’s Taking Action Against Elder Abuse Coordinated Community Response Grant Program.

On the list is the Nunee Health Board Society in Fort Chipewyan, for 2017/18 they will receive $47,500 to assist them in developing a Coordinated Community Response (CCR) model.

The Mikisew Cree First Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Uncle Fred’s Youth and Elders Lodge, and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) will work together to create the model.

The NDP government announced the money on June 15, 2017, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

“Seniors built this province and they deserve to retire in dignity. To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, our government is funding $1.5 million to community organizations to develop response models to address elder abuse. This will make life better for vulnerable seniors,” said Minister of Seniors and Housing, Lori Sigurdson.

The two most common forms of elder abuse in Canada are financial and emotional.

St. Aidan’s House Society in Fort McMurray received funding from 2014-2016, the first two years of the program.
