PHOTO. Supplied. FireSmart is a national program adopted in communities across Canada aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire in interface zones where the urban setting meets environments prone to wildfire.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has launched a new initiative called #FireSmartFriday.

Every Friday this summer the RMWB will share a #FireSmartFriday tip or information about FireSmart so residents can learn about the principles and ongoing projects in the region.

“Our goal is to help people better understand FireSmart and how they can be FireSmart at home,” said Dennis Warr, mitigation supervisor with the Recovery Task Force. “It will take support from the community and the participation of residents to implement FireSmart throughout the region”

FireSmart has seven disciplines:

  • Education
  • Vegetation
  • Legislation and planning
  • Development considerations
  • Inter-agency cooperation
  • Emergency planning
  • Cross training

Following these principles and making simple changes around homes and current projects throughout the community can help mitigate the risk of a wildfire.
