Helmets required when operating off highway vehicles

Anyone who is operating an Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) must wear a helmet.

A reminder from the Wood Buffalo RCMP that on May 15, 2017, the province introduced new helmet laws.

It requires users to wear CSA-compliant helmets when riding on any public land.

Not wearing a helmet could land you a $155 fine.

There are four designated off-loading sites for OHV’s within the urban service area: The Snye, Abasand, Timberlea/ Tower Road and Waterways.

You are not allowed to operate OHV’s in the urban service area, which includes riding your OHV to an off-loading site.

When operating your OHV it is important to keep in mind:

  • Your OHV must be registered and insured with a visible license plate
  • Carry an emergency kit, that includes a cell phone (and charger), food, water and first aid supplies
  • Let someone know where you will be travelling to and when you plan to return
  • Ensure you are familiar with your OHV
  • Operate at safe and reasonable speeds

Wood Buffalo RCMP and Municipal Bylaw services will be patrolling the urban area, rural area and out on the trails educating and enforcing riders.
