The Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) is taking nominations for the 2017 wood buffalo excellence in arts awards and hosting a valuable funding workshop for artists.

The Arts Awards is an annual program that recognizes and celebrates excellence in various areas of the arts and builds awareness of the incredible contribution artists make to the region.

There are 12 categories in various disciplines that artists, arts educators, arts administrators, youth and other creative individuals can be nominated in.

“Last year’s awards was a fantastic start to the program – there were 40 nominees, as well as 36 performers at the sold out showcase event which was enjoyed by 200 members of the community. We are very excited to work with our partners and stakeholders to once again celebrate our arts community,” says Liana Wheeldon, ACWB executive director.

Wheeldon urges nominations from the community because the Excellence in Arts Awards invests in the future of our arts community and creative economy.

“The recognition received by each nominee and award winner will raise their profile, build their portfolio, and allow them to compete and thrive as an artist within our community and beyond the borders of Wood Buffalo,” said Wheeldon.

The wood buffalo excellence in arts awards nomination application guidelines and forms are available online.

Nominations will be accepted until Aug. 15, and all nominee materials are due by Aug. 31.

The awards will be given out during a showcase event on Oct. 21.

There will be high energy, poignant performances and exhibitions that highlight all that our vibrant arts community has to offer.

Wheeldon says that “the Arts Showcase is an important piece of this program. It not only provides a paid opportunity for local artists, but it gives the wider community the opportunity to see some of region’s top artists right here in Fort McMurray.”

Tickets will be available for the public.
