RCMP officer pleads not guilty to two counts of dangerous driving

Const. Michelle Phillips has pleaded not guilty to two counts of dangerous driving.

In June, after an Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigation, she was charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Last August, the officer was responding to an accident on Highway 881 where a vehicle had hit a man who was walking.

ASIRT alleges that Phillips was driving to the scene at a high-rate of speed.

They also allege she drove by several stopped vehicles on the side of the highway– without slowing down– and ran over the pedestrian who was still on the road.

Tracy Janvier, the 41-year-old man died at the scene and a 71-year-old man who had been helping was hit in the hand causing serious injury.

The RCMP say at the time of the incident Phillips had one year of service.

She has been suspended with pay and will remain off duty as the RCMP performs a Code of Conduct review and all criminal charges are resolved.

A preliminary inquiry is scheduled for June 25-28, 2018.

There will be a public fatality inquiry for the death of Janvier, once the investigation and criminal matters are resolved.
