The Alberta RCMP is reminding everyone that safety is a shared responsibility during back to school.

Drivers should familiarize themselves with school zones and the times they are in effect.

Students should stay alert, walk on sidewalks, or facing on-coming traffic and cross streets at marked crosswalks or controlled intersections.

If students are riding a skateboard, scooter or roller-blading to school, ensure that safety gear is being worn.

In Alberta, youth under the age of 18 years, must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle at all times.

Parents should show their children a safe route to follow to and from school and discourage taking shortcuts through parking lots.

Drivers are also reminded that when a school bus activates flashing red lights, it is illegal to pass as long as the lights are still activated.
