Parents looking for update on school curriculum review

As we head into a new school year, a lot of parents are wondering what’s happening with Alberta’s School Curriculum.

It’s become a political hot potato lately.

A review was announced last year, and recently some opposition politicians have accused the government of social engineering.

However, the President of the Alberta Teachers Federation Greg Jeffery said the curriculum has to reflect changing times.

“I prefer a well-rounded education myself, certainly the ability to read well and have a strong sense of numeracy are important. But there are other things in the school system and the current curriculum we are working under was written in 1998,” Jeffery said.

He adds the committee reviewing curriculum changes will be looking for public feedback, likely sometime in the spring.
