The theme for this year’s United Way Community Campaign is togetherness.

The Fort McMurray United Way kicked off their annual fundraising campaign Thursday morning.

They are hoping to raise $7.1 million to support their 31 agencies.

“We looked really hard at the need we have in our community. We arrived at the $7.1 million not in any fancy fashion, it was truly taking the need that those 31 agencies have to deliver those critical services last year and were saying at a minimum we need to be able to continue that support,” said 2017 Community Campaign Chair, Steve Yatauro.

In 2016, they raised $6.3 million falling short of their $8 million goal.

“We can’t foresee the future. What we can do is rely on the history of the generosity of our community,” said President of the United Way Board of Directors, Tony Mankowski. “It has been overwhelming and anyway you look at it, the community has always stepped up. We are hoping that is exactly the same case.”

Yatauro said that this campaign is about all of us coming together as a community.

The community campaign closes Nov., 17.
