Councillor Keith McGrath has announced he will seek re-election for his Ward 1 council seat.

Thursday morning he spoke to a number of guests at the Golden Years Society saying he will “Bring Back the Energy” to the region and council.

McGrath has been a member of the community for over 30 years and has served in an elected office for the past 17 years, as a trustee with the Fort McMurray Catholic School District and sitting on council.

McGrath was emotional when talking about the first time he ran a campaign back in 1994.

His platform consists of factors such as, implementing all of the municipal recommendations outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, developing a river front boardwalk and refocusing on key services.

McGrath says incoming council needs to look at delivering services differently.

“Maybe it means we don’t pick up your garbage on Christmas Day. Maybe it means we don’t run a grader down the road, when you’re looking at asphalt, looking for snow, maybe it means we don’t cut the grass at midnight,” said McGrath.

McGrath believes developing a river front boardwalk because it would be a cheap project, would improve residents’ quality of life and make people stay in the region.

“I believe were just a couple of dollars away from having a beautiful place where you can take your family. Walk from the Snye all the way down the riverfront, through Heritage Park and then you can land yourself right at the end of horse pasture. These projects don’t cost your millions of dollars,” said McGrath.

The municipal election is on Oct. 16.
