The long awaited Willow Square Continuing Care Centre is on track to see shovels in the ground.

On Wednesday, Premier Rachel Notley confirmed that construction is expected to start in the spring of 2018 with an anticipated completion date of 2019 and be open for service in 2020.

“We are moving forward, very consistently, very determinately and we are committed to getting that project completed here in Fort McMurray. People should know that they are not going to be hearing about equivocation or making the decision yet again, but that in fact we are committed to delivering on that promise,” said Premier Notley.

The centre has an allocated budget of $110 million.

It will have 144 spaces with room to expand and will provide both a home and needed medical services to seniors and younger physically disabled adults.

Alberta Infrastructure gave an update at the Aug. 22 council meeting stating that the site plans designate 70 per cent of land to continuing care and the remaining 30 per cent to Aging in Place, a separate project.

A start date for the Aging in Place hasn’t been determined.
