Members of the Fort McMurray Fire Department (FMFD) participated in the FireFit National Championships in Ottawa from Sept. 6-10.

The competition consists of fire departments across the country competing in job related tasks.

“Essentially it’s a head to head competition, it could be individual, relay or tandem based and the tasks are based on certain things we could do on the fire ground like carrying a high-rise pack up the stairs, hoisting equipment up on a high-rise, doing a forcible entry, hose or victim drag and your timed to go as fast as you can,” said Firefit team member, Fraser O’Neil.

This was the teams eighth season competing, this year they took home five national championships including the men and women’s relay, tandem and women’s team time.

They also placed second in men’s team time and tandem and third for women’s tandem.

Fraser O’Neil placed third for individual competition.

Besides keeping their physical fitness up, O’Neil says the team is proud to take part in the competition to represent the department and the city.

Next month the team will be competing at Worlds in Louisville, Kentucky.
